Putting Revelations

The Revelations

After 30 years of playing golf, there were so many things I didn’t know about Putting. Like most golfers, I would purchase the “new and hottest” putter the pros were using in hopes of improving my putting. However, the new putter never helped with my putting stats: total putts per round and “three putts” per round weren’t reduced. I definitely didn’t putt like the Pros. When I made it my personal goal to become a WORLD CLASS putter, that is when the Revelations were discovered, and the dramatic improvements began. Following are many of the Revelations:

  • Per Golf Digest, 90% of golfers are playing with improperly fit putters that lead to a poor setup, off line aim, stroke inconsistencies and poor face impact control
    • LENGTH matters and most players are using too long of a putter
      • MEN: Standard putter length off the shelf is 35”and the average length for “fitted” putters is 33”
      • WOMEN: Standard length off the shelf is 33” and “fitted” length is 31” on average
    • Putters have LOFT on them, typically 3-4 degrees, and the golf ball is airborne before it goes into “True Roll”
    • The LIE ANGLE of the putter affects direction of your putt: toe up = pulls, heel up = pushes
  • 85% of the ball’s initial direction is determined by Face Angle at Impact and only 15% by the Putter’s path
    • Pros are typically at .5% or less open or closed face angle
    • A 6-foot putt with a face angle 2 degrees open or closed will MISS the hole
  • 40% of your score is putting
    • A putter is used on almost every hole and many times is used 2+ times per hole
    • Putters are the least understood and least practiced club in the bag and the easiest way to shave strokes off your game
    • USGA average 3 putts per round is 5
      • Reduce 3 putts to 1 per round and lower your handicap by 4!
  • A 3-foot putt counts as much as a 260-yard drive

  • 50% of all putts are 6’ or less
    • Pros make 50% inside 6’
    • 80% of players cannot accurately aim a 6’ putt
    • You need to make 8 out of 10 six-foot putts to be considered a decent putter
  • Putts are UNDER READ by 65% on average

  • Eye alignment over the ball can deceive our alignment

  • Off center impact affects distance control

  • Depth perception contributes to putting length issues

  • WORLD CLASS PUTTING
    • Impact the ball consistently in about ¼” circle of putters face
      • 8+ handicaps have 1.5” of variation which affects energy delivered to the ball for distance control and twists putter face open or closed
    • Align putter face angle to intended line by less than ½ degree
    • Putter path is aligned to within ½ degree
    • Control distance incredibly well
    • Exceptional green reading
  • Most players don’t have a good putting practice routine and the ability to calibrate to the speed of the greens
